Weekly Recap #2: 2I1Š end FER’s Rocket League dynasty

The first tournament of the seventh season of the A1 Student eChallenge has officially come to an end, and what a finish it was. Over three days of competition, students battled through the Rocket League group stage and playoffs, delivering tense series, dominant performances, and one historic grand final.

In the end, 2 inženjera 1 šumar completed an incredible run and defeated defending champions FER in a dramatic 4:3 grand final, becoming the new A1SeC Rocket League champions and ending FER’s long-standing dominance in the competition.

Recap: Group A

Group A opened with a match between TVZ and FSB Esport. TVZ started the season strongly with a convincing 4:2 victory in the opening game. FSB responded immediately and managed to take the second game 5:4 after a tense finish, but TVZ quickly regained control and closed out the series with dominant 4:0 and 6:2 wins.

The second scheduled match between TVZ and 2 inženjera 1 šumar unfortunately did not take place, resulting in a free win for 2I1Š. However, the final match of the group stage left no doubts about their quality. Against FSB, 2I1Š completely dominated every game of the series, winning 6:1, 6:1, and 7:1.

With performances like these, 2I1Š immediately established themselves as one of the main favourites for the title.

Recap: Group B

Group B started with a convincing performance from DPZ, who swept FANTOMI with scores of 7:0, 4:1, and 5:2. FANTOMI struggled to create meaningful chances, while DPZ looked composed throughout the entire series.

FANTOMI then faced defending champions FER in their final match of the tournament. Even while joking around during parts of the series, FER still showed exactly why they entered the tournament as favourites. They comfortably closed out the series 5:1, 2:0, and 5:0.

The final match of the group stage decided the seeding between FER and DPZ. FER once again looked dominant, taking the opening two games 5:0 and 5:2. Although the third game was much closer, FER still managed to secure the win with a late goal just seconds before the end, finishing the series 2:1 and locking in first place in the group.

2I1Š’ Historic playoff run ends FER’s winning streak

The playoff stage opened with a dominant performance from 2I1Š, who sent DPZ to the lower bracket after wins of 3:0, 8:1, and 5:4.

The second semifinal between FER and TVZ turned out to be far more competitive than expected. Every game ended with just a one-goal difference, but FER still managed to complete a 3:0 sweep with wins of 3:2, 1:0, and 4:3.

In the lower bracket, TVZ quickly bounced back and showed why they pushed FER so hard earlier in the day. They comfortably defeated DPZ while conceding only one goal across three games, winning 4:0, 4:0, and 7:1 to secure third place in the tournament.

Meanwhile, FER continued their impressive run by defeating 2I1Š 3:0 in the upper bracket final, setting up a tense lower bracket rematch between 2I1Š and TVZ. This time, 2I1Š looked unstoppable. They defeated TVZ 4:1, 7:1, and 8:3 to secure their place in the grand final against FER.

The grand final delivered everything fans could hope for. Coming from the upper bracket, FER entered the series with a one-set advantage, meaning 2I1Š needed a near-perfect performance to take the title. Despite losing to FER earlier in the playoffs, Alpine, Swizz, and EXQZ returned with a completely different level of gameplay and coordination.

2I1Š won the opening game 2:1 before FER answered with a 3:1 victory. Two more wins for 2I1Š (2:0 and 5:3) suddenly pushed them to match point, but FER refused to give up and forced a final deciding game. In the most dramatic match of the tournament, 2I1Š held their nerve and secured a 2:1 victory, completing the upset and becoming the new A1SeC Rocket League champions.

For the first time in A1SeC history, FER and Matija “Dred” Vandek did not win the title. Instead, the crown now belongs to Alpine, Swizz, and EXQZ who ended the longest win streak in the competition’s history.
